Nobody needs to be told what's at stake for the Washington Commanders this season. The heat is on to make the improvements needed, and nothing but competitiveness and high-quality football will do.
Fans are cautiously optimistic. Coaches and players have heard all the doubts and are ready to silence them. They have talent, and the new schemes on offense and defense should help enormously. But it remains a precarious situation that could legitimately go either way.
It won't take long to find out what the Commanders are truly made of.
They have a daunting start to the season heading into their Week 7 bye. Any slow start won't be tolerated, so hitting the ground running to build the momentum needed is critical to avoid any unnecessary complications further down the line.
The Commanders won't have it all their own way. But if they cannot get it done, things will get messy at the worst possible time.

Ben Sinnott - Commanders TE
The Commanders should have a more productive tight end room this season. New offensive coordinator David Blough plans to use the position more heavily within his scheme, and the personnel in place have all left a positive mark over the summer.
Ben Sinnott is among them. The 2024 second-round pick has made no secret of his disdain for Kliff Kingsbury's system and his lack of usage within it during interviews. He believes the Commanders now have a real NFL offense, and he wants to be a bigger part of the team's plans.
Sinnott has some useful qualities. He's athletic with dependable hands and has flashed as a blocker. He remains firmly behind free-agent signings Chig Okonkwo and John Bates on the depth chart, but there should be opportunities for him to shine.
If not now for Sinnott, then when?
Odafe Oweh - Commanders OLB
General manager Adam Peters knew what had to be done this offseason. He needed to improve the Commanders' options on the defensive edge, and the front-office leader splashed the cash to land one of the most coveted free agents on the market.
Odafe Oweh was their guy. The Commanders gave him a four-year, $96 million deal with a $26 million signing bonus and $68 million guaranteed. That's a lot of money for someone who's been nothing more than a highly productive situational rusher throughout his career, but much more is expected now.
Oweh is being paid handsomely. The Commanders will be expecting him to become a three-down force capable of flipping the script of any game. He's got the size, length, and burst to make things happen, but improving against the run is essential to achieve this objective.
With a massive price tag comes great expectations. Oweh must meet them, and he must do it immediately.
