The Washington Commanders face some difficult choices before the 2026 trade deadline. General manager Adam Peters' next move could prove whether this team is serious or stuck.

Making bold moves at 2-4-1 might not be too smart. It's not impossible, but much will also depend on whether the Commanders can secure a memorable upset over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 9.

Peters will take everything into account. But with certain position groups lacking legitimate depth after a flurry of injuries, the front-office leader could take drastic action to fill the void.

Commanders are in a delicate position before the 2026 trade deadline

The Commanders might be struggling, but they are not out of the NFC East fight just yet after beating the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football. And if they can somehow beat the Rams, that might just give Peters a big enough excuse to justify aggression before the November 10 cut-off point.

It's a fine line. Fans are divided, so whether he moves on not with incoming or outgoing trades will tell everything about this team's legitimate ambitions this season.

Shipping someone out is tricky.

The Commanders' two most valuable trade pieces — wide receiver Terry McLaurin and defensive lineman Daron Payne — recently suffered season-ending injuries. Dyami Brown is also on the shelf, and it's hard to say whether anyone else would generate enough interest.

If the Commanders want to be bold and go for it, the wide receiver position could be the play.

Washington's options have dwindled to concerning levels. McLaurin and Brown are long-term absences. Treylon Burks will miss Week 9 with a foot problem, leaving the Commanders with third-round rookie Antonio Williams, four-time Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs, and not much else.

Adam Peters' trade deadline stance might be determined by Commanders' Week 9 result

The running back unit could use a boost, and the defensive trenches have been decimated by Payne and Javon Kinlaw's long-term issues.

Should the Commanders upset the Rams, they would move to 3-4-1. They also have a more favorable upcoming schedule, so Quinn's squad could greatly improve their fortunes before things get serious down the stretch.

And if there is genuine belief in the building, a trade before the deadline could help their chances.

Peters went all in with some blockbuster trade moves last year. He believed the Commanders were close after reaching the conference championship game, but it was a false dawn. This caused Washington to pivot, and an indifferent start this year might be enough to stand pat.

Throwing more draft picks at the problem — especially if the Commanders are 2-5-1 with a loss to the Rams — would reek of reckless desperation. The division is still in reach, but the margin for error has gone, so Peters could decide to take his medicine and let things play out before a critical offseason for the club in 2027.

If the Commanders had a better record right now, it would be a different story.

Unfortunately, that's not the case. With pressure mounting, Peters finds himself in a delicate situation as the trade deadline looms.

This is the NFL, where nothing can be dismissed, and surprises can arrive in the blink of an eye.

But for the Commanders, it comes down to how much hope will remain in their chances this season after a crucial game against the Rams.

That will be the deciding factor in the end.
