The Washington Commanders have some concerns at receiver. Their depth will now be stretched further after an injury to Dyami Brown in practice.
General manager Adam Peters told The Sports Junkies on 106.7 The Fan that Brown tweaked something in Thursday's practice as the Commanders prepare to face the Los Angeles Rams in Week 9 at Northwest Stadium. Further tests will reveal more, but the front-office leader admitted it "did not look good."
Brown has been an afterthought in recent weeks after flattering to deceive once again. This setback also leaves the Commanders desperately short on viable rotational options for quarterback Jayden Daniels to rely on.
Dyami Brown's injury could be the tipping point for Commanders' trade deadline move
Second-team All-Pro wideout Terry McLaurin is out for the year with a torn patellar tendon. Jaylin Lane is on the shelf, and Treylon Burks is also managing a foot complication.
If Brown is also set for an extended spell on the sidelines, the Commanders' receiver depth will be stretched to the limit.
Peters might be content to call Jaden Bradley up from the practice squad to the active roster. But this could raise urgency to make a trade before the 2026 deadline.
The Commanders are 2-4-1. That doesn't suggest a bold incoming trade is wise, but Washington needs to get Daniels more help.
Four-time Pro Bowl wideout Stefon Diggs and third-round rookie Antonio Williams are playing well. But with Burks not at 100 percent and Van Jefferson Jr.'s limitations obvious, this could be the tipping point for drastic action.
There is no telling for sure. Brown was on the fringes, so the corresponding move might be to fill out the spot with another depth piece rather than anything more daring.
Commanders must start thinking about the bigger picture as receiver injuries mount
But it's now unlikely Brown will get another go-around next season. And at some point, Peters has to start thinking about the bigger picture.
McLaurin's future is shaky at best as he heads into a grueling period of rehabilitation. Diggs is out of contract, as is Jefferson. Luke McCaffrey and Lane cannot be trusted with important roles, and Brown's injury is the final nail in his proverbial coffin.
That doesn't bode well for the future. And with Daniels becoming extension-eligible after the season, the urgency to take advantage of his shrinking rookie contract window could be enough for Peters to make a splash.
It's a contentious issue for fans, but the trend at receiver is alarming.
And if the Commanders genuinely believe they can win the less-than-impressive NFC East with a strong second half of the season, getting receiver help right now is crucial.
Brown made the roster, but not much else. He always seemed to stand out over the summer, then fizzled out. It's been the tale of his NFL career, and this injury concern could see his second stint in Washington follow a similar path.
Injuries have once again dented Washington's hopes this season. But when it comes to their obvious receiver problems, the Commanders still have time to do something about it.
And if Peters was looking for an excuse to justify trading for a prolific receiver before the deadline, he now has it.
Wait and see, I guess...
