Javontae Jean-Baptiste - Commanders DE/OLB

General manager Adam Peters had to prioritize the edge-rushing options this offseason. The Washington Commanders achieved this objective, and the new arrivals could turn a failing unit into a strength if everyone stays healthy.

These acquisitions push everyone else further down the depth chart. Javontae Jean-Baptiste has gone from an intriguing rotational presence to the roster bubble, and a huge effort is needed to stick around for his third season with the club.

Jean-Baptiste flashed as a rookie. Some thought the Commanders may have another steal with the 2024 seventh-round pick, but an injury ended his NFL sophomore season way ahead of time. He's now healthy, but Peters has raised the stakes in no uncertain terms.

The Notre Dame product has a fight to make the team. Much will depend on how many edge rushers the Commanders take through, but Jean-Baptiste must have a strong training camp and shine during the preseason to book his place on the squad.

Jordan Magee - Commanders LB

There is still immense belief in Jordan Magee. The linebacker has all the physical tools imaginable to be impactful, and the flashes when given prominent defensive reps last season were promising. Even so, the Commanders were in no position to wait around this offseason.

Washington signed Leo Chenal in free agency and spent the No. 7 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on Sonny Styles. Daronte Jones is moving Frankie Luvu back to his preferred off-ball role, so this could be a formidable trio capable of providing the violence and speed that was desperately lacking in 2025.

What that means for Magee's role is anyone's guess.

He appears behind this trio right now, but Jones' system should be versatile and interchangeable enough for Magee to still feature. But if the former Temple standout wants to be anything more than a special-teams ace, his anticipation and angles in pursuit must become more consistent.

Jaylin Lane - Commanders WR

The Commanders' wide receiver unit is in flux. Terry McLaurin is the only one with proven consistency at the highest level, and he has new questions to answer after a frustrating 2025. Most experts believe more is required, but Adam Peters has not pulled the trigger on anything so far.

That could change as we get closer to Week 1, and the lingering cloud of Brandon Aiyuk's possible release hangs over the franchise. If Washington is sufficiently impressed by its current options, there is also a chance Peters could stand pat.

What comes next is down to them. Any more additions will only push others further down the pecking order. Jaylin Lane's roster spot doesn't look in any real jeopardy, especially given his ability as a punt returner, but if he wants to increase his targets under David Blough, massive improvements are needed.

Lane is talented. However, some technical refinements are needed to build confidence.
