Commanders could sign Stefon Diggs
Brandon Aiyuk isn't the only wide receiver casting alluring glances at the Washington Commanders this offseason. Stefon Diggs has also made no secret about his desire to speak with the organization about a potential homecoming, something that obviously intrigues the gifted pass-catcher at this relatively late stage of his playing career.
Diggs also has baggage, but his legal issues are now over. He's working hard, staying sharp in readiness for his next opportunity. And with Aiyuk seemingly blowing his chance to land with the Commanders after throwing shade at Jayden Daniels on social media, this is arguably the next best option.
The former Maryland is available now. He's a better option in the short term, and he would be a tremendous complementary piece to put opposite Terry McLaurin. While Diggs' powers might be waning, he knows how to get open. He's also got the flair for the big occasion, which is another massive plus.
Washington has not shown any interest as yet. Perhaps Adam Peters is surveying the landscape, or the money attached to any deal is giving him pause. Diggs will have other suitors, so if there is any substance to this clash between Aiyuk and Daniels, the Commanders should pivot to the four-time Pro Bowler as a matter of urgency.
Commanders could trade for Kayshon Boutte
The New England Patriots now have a surplus at the wide receiver position. After surging above expectations to clinch the AFC Championship last season, the club took things up a notch by signing Romeo Doubs in free agency and making a blockbuster trade for A.J. Brown, ending his turbulent relationship with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Kayshon Boutte could be the odd man out. The wideout skipped part of their offseason workout program in hopes of landing a new deal. That didn't arrive, and the arrivals of Doubs and Brown only push him further down the pecking order.
This has led to speculation that a trade could be considered if the Patriots receive an acceptable offer. As previously mentioned, the Commanders have moved away from trades this offseason, but Boutte is young enough to be considered a long-term investment. And he's also got previous chemistry with Jayden Daniels from their time together at LSU.
Much would depend on the compensation involved. Boutte is ascending, but his production isn't anywhere near the elite level of wideouts around the league. The player would probably want a new contract upon joining the franchise, which may be off-putting without proving it on the field.
Still, it's something to think about.
