Things did not go according to plan for veteran safety Will Harris during his first season with the Washington Commanders. He got hurt early and couldn't generate any positive momentum when he did return to the lineup. However, the new defensive regime was not willing to give up on him just yet.
According to those in attendance, Harris had a nice day. He is the third safety behind free-agent signing Nick Cross and Jeremy Reaves right now, but there should still be a role for him to play within Daronte Jones' versatile system.
Getting around the football consistently is Harris' best gift. His experience puts him in the right positions to make plays, and even though tackling is at a premium over camp, the defensive back caught the eye by being in the correct spots to make a difference.
It's a big year for Harris, the last of his deal in Washington. There doesn't seem much chance of him getting another financial commitment from the club as things stand, but if the performances improve and the 2019 third-round pick out of Boston College stays healthy, the current mindset could change.
This latest camp effort should be a huge confidence boost for Harris. Building on it is crucial.
Kaytron Allen - Commanders RB
Nobody loves the physical element of football more than running back Kaytron Allen. The sixth-round rookie promised fans that they would see what he is all about when the pads went on at training camp. And he's been a man of his word so far.
Saturday's practice was arguably Allen's best since being drafted by Washington, based on reports. The Commanders got a lot of work into the Penn State product, and he seized almost every moment. He made some big gains and even made a couple of nice catches out of the backfield for good measure.

Though free-agent signing Rachaad White and Jacory Croskey-Merritt will likely lead the backfield committee, Allen is also staking a strong claim for involvement. He brings a power element that others don't, and this could be useful for new offensive coordinator David Blough after the Commanders let Chris Rodriguez Jr. leave for the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency.
It'll be fascinating to see how Allen fares in the preseason, starting next Friday against the Miami Dolphins. He will relish the challenge of getting into a game-day environment to further showcase what he can bring to the table. And don't be surprised if the first-year pro excels throughout Washington's warm-up slate.
