Kaytron Allen has not moved like your average sixth-round rookie throughout the offseason. And the Washington Commanders are starting to see real glimpses of what the running back could bring in Year 1 of his professional career.
Penn State's all-time leading rusher stated earlier this offseason that fans would see the real him when the pads came on at training camp. That is when Allen believes his supreme physicality can be showcased to full effect, and even though there is a long way to go, he was a man of his word.
The extra intensity that comes with padded practice seemed to bring more out of Allen, based on reports from those in attendance. He's a punishing runner who's difficult to bring down. He is also becoming more of a threat in the passing game than many gave him credit for.

And as fourth-year defensive back Quan Martin found out to his cost, Allen has a mean stiff-arm that deserves respect.

These are all positive signs for Allen. His place on the 53-man roster looks assured, but it's clear he wants so much more. He's pushing himself and everyone else around him with a mindset that's hard not to love. It's still early days, but this is precisely what the Commanders needed to see.
Jacory Croskey-Merritt and free-agent signing Rachaad White are expected to lead the backfield charge, and both have performed well this offseason. Even so, this duo brings a finesse element rather than true power, and that's where Allen comes in.
While Allen wants to be much more than a short-yardage and red-zone option, that's not a bad way to get an immediate foot in the door. After that, he can continue to evolve his game into a more well-rounded force, though he is probably never going to be an elite game-breaker without top-end speed to depend on.
But Allen has silenced his doubters before.

The Commanders saw something in Allen that others didn't. After losing Chris Rodriguez Jr. to the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency, this looks like a ready-made replacement. Having someone capable of gaining hard yards in between the tackles is going to make things easier for Croskey-Merritt and White. It'll also keep quarterback Jayden Daniels out of harm's way, which is another big priority.
And even though the preseason will tell us much more about Allen's ability to produce on an NFL field, things couldn't be going much better right now.
Allen has not come to play a bit-part role. He wants to be great, and this ambition has been the catalyst for a smooth transition.
The player known as 'Fatman' has quickly become a fan favorite. Allen's classic one-liners instantly endeared him to the team's passionate support, but for the Commanders, his overall approach and gradual development are all that matters.
It's so far, so good on that front. And if the same trend continues when opportunities come his way in the regular season, don't be shocked if his eye-catching surge continues.
The Commanders got the draft's biggest steal with Croskey-Merritt in the seventh round last year. They might just have another with Allen, who continues to blaze an encouraging trail.
