After their first preseason game and a couple of relaxed walk-throughs, the Washington Commanders got back down to business at training camp. And even though there were a few influential figures missing due to injury, it's clear that the tempo has already increased.
The Commanders know this weekend's preseason outing against the Detroit Lions will be a bigger measuring stick than last week's engagements with the Miami Dolphins. And with a warm-up clash and joint practice versus the Houston Texans also upcoming, it's sure to separate the weak from the strong.
General manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn probably know what the large majority of their 53-man roster will look like by now. But there is still time for plans to change, and if the power couple isn't entirely satisfied with what the Commanders have, there is always the waiver wire, trade market, or veteran free-agent pool to find reinforcements.
This should keep urgency high right up until final cuts and beyond. And some tough decisions await the Commanders when fates are determined.

Chig Okonkwo - Commanders TE
There is enormous excitement around what Chig Okonkwo could potentially bring to the Commanders' offense. Rookie play-caller David Blough wants to get the tight ends more involved, and the free-agent signing is sure to be at the forefront as a possible breakout star within this scheme.
Okonkwo has speed, dynamism, and violent tendencies after the catch. The chemistry with quarterback Jayden Daniels is growing, and according to those in attendance, this was another impressive day for the Maryland product.

With the wide receiver duo of Terry McLaurin and recent arrival Stefon Diggs demanding significant attention, there should be plenty of space for Okonkwo to work. And if he stays healthy, the $27 million man could be in line for a career year in Washington.
Drew Stevens - Commanders PK
The Commanders crowned Drew Stevens as the winner of their kicking competition earlier than expected, releasing veteran Jake Moody after he failed to keep up. And in his first practice as the confirmed starter, the undrafted rookie put on a show for those watching on.
Not for the first time this summer, Stevens was absolutely flawless at practice. The Iowa product nailed all six of his field goal attempts, and while his 60-yard attempt went through the upright via a doink, it's a sign of the impressive leg strength he brings to the table.
In his first practice since winning the kicking battle, Drew Stevens was 6/6 with a long of 60 yards today.

His 60-yarder doinked off the crossbar and in after a sub-optimal snap that threw off the timing a hair. Stevens is now 49-of-54 including 2-for-2 from 60 in practices.
Washington made the right choice here. There is no doubt about that.
Stevens boasts far more promise and long-term upside than Moody, and he vastly outperformed him throughout the offseason. There will be good times and bad, but allowing the rookie to overcome adversity and grow as a player in the NFL could see him finally become the team's long-term answer at the kicking spot.
That would be a win-win for everybody.
