Lawrence Cager - Commanders TE

David Blough is expected to use the tight end position more frequently during his first year as an NFL play-caller. The signs were obvious over the Washington Commanders' early offseason program, and the signing of Chig Okonkwo on a three-year, $27 million deal is already bringing real intrigue.

John Bates will have an important role as an in-line blocker who can also make plays in the passing game when called upon. There are growing signs that 2024 second-round pick Ben Sinnott can be more impactful, either at tight end or even as an H-back depending on the alignment.

The Commanders have taken four tight ends onto their 53-man roster for the two seasons under Dan Quinn. Colson Yankoff would be the favorite for the TE4 role if the same happens again, but Lawrence Cager is someone the coaching staff is also high on.

Cager is a converted wide receiver with all the physical tools required. He spent last season on the practice squad, but Quinn praised his encouraging development. This growth needs to become something more over the summer.

It would be wise for the Commanders to give Cager all he can handle during the preseason. That will be the ultimate litmus test, and if he comes through these challenges with even more positivity, that might be enough.

Jaden Bradley - Commanders WR

There is no position group under more scrutiny than the wide receiver room right now. Concerns are evident behind Terry McLaurin, and speculation regarding another dependable veteran coming into the fold has been rife throughout the offseason.

Adam Peters has not taken the plunge with anyone just yet. This could mean he is waiting for the right opportunity, or it could mean there is confidence in the young options all making strides with David Blough calling plays.

Things should become clearer over training camp. However, the buzz continues to build around undrafted rookie Jaden Bradley after he made his presence felt during OTAs and mandatory minicamp.

Bradley has the size, length, and speed to be a potential asset. Some technical refinements are needed to take the next step, but he's off to a good start. The challenges will obviously get tougher the deeper we delve into Washington's preparations for the new campaign, but fans should keep a close eye on his progress.

Making the 53-man roster remains a difficult proposition for Bradley. There is competition for places, and the Commanders may value experience with a lot on the line this season. At the same time, this coaching staff always rewards strong performance, so if he can thrive at training camp and in the preseason, he'll give his chances a considerable boost.

If not, a place on the practice squad wouldn't be a bad consolation prize.
