The Washington Commanders are looking to restore pride this season. To do that, a few surprises must emerge and take a leading role.
Obviously, some players will be counted upon more than others. That's the hierarchy behind depth charts across the league. However, every successful team has some individuals who perform well above expectations.
The Commanders are in a precarious spot. They have plenty of difference-makers on both sides of the football. Whether the new coordinators can mesh everything together quickly remains to be seen, but with Washington facing a brutal gauntlet to begin the campaign, nothing but an imposing start will suffice.
Head coach Dan Quinn is confident. General manager Adam Peters shares that view, despite fans' concerns about some position groups. But after last season's five-win season, when most fans were expecting another deep postseason run, talk is cheap.
Producing the goods when it counts is all that matters now.
If the Commanders get a better run of luck on the injury front, they have a chance to be more competitive. It's a fine-margins situation, but if quarterback Jayden Daniels puts a consistent run of games together, they will never be out of the fight.

Jaylin Lane - Commanders WR
Much has been made about the wide receiver dynamic. It was a difficult numbers game for Adam Peters to figure out, but the front-office leader moved masterfully to ensure everyone got the chance to stick around on the active roster or the practice squad.
How the snaps will be allocated when the regular season begins is another matter.
Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs are the top two, and there isn't much debate about that. Treylon Burks was listed as the third starter on Washington's Week 1 depth chart, and third-round rookie Antonio Williams should also feature prominently once he picks things up.
Second-year wideout Jaylin Lane isn't spoken about much. But don't be surprised if he forces his way into the equation as the campaign goes on.
Lane was used sparingly in Year 1 of his professional career. He had some problems with drops, which is never the best way to inspire trust. The Virginia Tech product managed to make a considerable impact as a punt returner, but he'll want much more this time around.
The 2025 fourth-round pick has the speed and elusiveness to make an impact. Lane's skills look well-suited to David Blough's schematic concepts, and if he can prove himself dependable whenever targets come his way, he's got a shot at being a surprise most don't see coming.
