Commanders under pressure with Chase Young

The dominos are beginning to fall around the NFL regarding fifth-year potions within the 2020 NFL Draft class. No-brainers such as Justin Jefferson, Joe Burrow, and Tristan Wirfs had their contract clauses triggered on Tuesday, with Tua Tagovailoa and CeeDee Lamb others who’ll now play through 2024 on their respective teams.

There has been no move made yet by the Washington Commanders regarding Chase Young. The defensive end’s status is firmly hanging in the balance after a frustrating last two seasons, which means this particular decision could go either way given the financial implications involved.

Jordan Epp from Yard Barker recently stated that the Commanders would likely want to pick up Young’s option in the hope he can bounce back. However, it might not be that simple considering the money – which stands at more than $17 million.

"Chase Young, a former No. 2 pick for Washington, has played just 12 games over the last two seasons. While the Commanders most likely will want to retain the former Defensive Rookie of the Year, his guaranteed $17.45 million price tag may be too much for his injury risk."

The Commanders played it safe with Daron Payne and paid a hefty price following his breakout campaign in 2022. If they adopt a similar method this time around, then the complications are there for all to see with Montez Sweat also on the lookout for a new deal.

It’s a precarious situation. And the May 2 deadline is fast approaching.
