Which young Washington Commanders players are heading for bigger roles unless something drastic occurs before the 2023 season?

There are plenty of positive vibes emanating from the Washington Commanders this offseason. The introduction of Eric Bieniemy, retaining Daron Payne on a long-term deal, and the promise of Dan Snyder finally relinquishing power indicate bigger and better things could be coming to the franchise despite the increasing competitiveness within the NFC East.

Obviously, more is needed and health will become a major factor for key individuals. However, there is a purpose regarding Washington’s dealings so far to further bolster a roster that has the right blend of youth and experience currently.

For the Commanders to take that next step en route to a potential postseason return next season, it needs to be a collective effort. This also includes lesser experienced individuals coming to the fore with another preparation period under their belts.

With this in mind, here are four Commanders players heading for bigger roles in 2023.

Releasing Bobby McCain was the biggest sign yet of the confidence surrounding Percy Butler heading into Year 2 of his professional career. The athletic defensive back caught the eye when called upon in 2022 and providing further improvements arrive this offseason, it’s hard to envisage a scenario where he isn’t involved more.

Butler won’t be a starting safety thanks to the presence of Kamren Curl and Darrick Forrest. But defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio could rely on the former fourth-round pick in nickel packages when opportunities arise.
