4 Commanders players who’ll benefit from early free-agent moves in 2023

Jamin Davis – Commanders LB
It’s no secret that linebacking help was coming to Washington Commanders this offseason. A need that was made greater by Cole Holcomb’s departure to the Pittsburgh Steelers on a three-year deal in free agency.
The Commanders have signed Cody Barton following his impressive breakout campaign with the Seattle Seahawks in 2022. However, just where the player is best suited remains to be seen.
If Washington opts to slot Barton as a swing option on the outside, then it could lead to Jack Del Rio placing Jamin Davis as the middle linebacker option. Something that would be welcome and could lead to further progress from the former first-round pick for good measure.
Davis is held to a higher standard than others based on where he was drafted. The one-time Kentucky standout went over 100 tackles last season and generated three sacks to further enhance his influence, but there were inconsistencies that need ironing out before he’s ready to take the next step.
The addition of Barton gives Del Rio options. Allowing Davis to be physical and instinctive from the interior could be highly beneficial for all parties depending on what transpires during the 2023 NFL Draft.
