If you look back far enough, you will find that I supported the idea of the Washington Football Team spending a late round draft pick on Newman in the 2021 draft and developing him as the QB-of-the-future. The fact that he is entirely out of the league after a brief tryout with the Eagles in May, does give me some pause, however.

Everyone knew that Newman was a talented passer with size and good straight ahead running ability. But a quick look at his tape also reveals a very mechanical quarterback who never seems entirely comfortable, especially if things break down in the pocket. I was of the opinion that a a couple years with a good QB coach could improve that flaw.

I still believe that, but Newman has a long way to go. After a promising couple of seasons at Wake Forest, Newman made big news by transferring to Georgia for the 2020 season. Then COVID hit and Newman opted out of his final college season.

Aside from the 2021 Senior Bowl, Newman has not played a real football game since, and it has clearly sidetracked his development. But he has the most upside of any young free agent sitting out there, and if you can devote a season or two to his development, he could still be a diamond in the rough.
