Redskins vs. Vikings preview: Storylines, how to watch, and more
By Ian Cummings
Diverging paths converge again tonight, as the Redskins take on Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Tonight’s matchup marks the first time since 1963 that two quarterbacks have played against their former teams in the same game. Kirk Cousins, now the starting quarterback for the Vikings, will battle his former employers for the first time in his career. Washington Redskins quarterback Case Keenum, meanwhile, will play the Vikings for the first time since leaving them in the offseason of 2018.
The two quarterbacks have taken diverging paths since leaving their former teams. Kirk Cousins had an up-and-down first season with the Vikings after signing a record-breaking deal, but he’s since caught fire in 2019, and he’s in the midst of a hot streak that has him ranked up with the top passers in the league.
Keenum, meanwhile, played in Denver for one season after his breakout 2017 campaign, and after throwing 18 touchdowns to 15 interceptions for the Broncos, he was traded to the Redskins for a late-round pick swap. Keenum has been serviceable at best in 2019 as the Redskins’ bridge quarterback, but he’ll hope to pick up his play on Thursday night, in an attempt to convince his former employers that they made the wrong choice.
That said, these quarterbacks are both class acts, and they likely won’t vocalize any desires for revenge, if there are any to begin with. Kirk Cousins is on the record expressing his gratitude for the opportunity Washington provided him before his emergence, and Keenum can only be thankful; he’s still one of the 32 starting quarterbacks in the NFL, for the time being. His career hasn’t always promised that.
The quarterbacks might not subscribe to the storylines, but these storylines will write themselves anyway. Who will win this duel of coinciding replacements? To watch, you’ll be able to tune in on live television, as the game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports, with the legendary Joe Buck and Troy Aikman commentating. If you won’t have access to a television, for whatever reason, you can still watch via one of several online live streaming options, including NFL Game Pass and FuboTV.
