Option 3: Jim Tomsula

Unlike the previous candidates in Horton and Ryan, Jim Tomsula has been on Gruden’s coaching staff since the 2017 season. He has overseen a defensive line that has been one of the more productive parts of the defense since his arrival. Notable members of the defensive line include Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne, and Matt Ioannidis, all of whom who have progressed mightily under Tomsula’s tutelage.

However, Tomsula does not have any NFL coordinator experience unlike Horton and Ryan. Should this prevent him from being named as a replacement for Manusky?

In short, no. His lack of coordinator experience should not prevent him from being named as a replacement for Manusky. Tomsula has shown the ability to develop talent, and has the personality to effectively relate to the players. Furthermore, being that he has been on the coaching staff the longest of the group, he may ultimately have the trust of Gruden, who is on a short leash himself.

And let’s not forget that Tomsula also had a short-lived stint as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. So while he may not have experience serving as a defensive coordinator, he has served in a leadership role so that may make him a more attractive candidate should the position become available.
