Option 2: Rob Ryan

Rob Ryan, in his first season with the organization, currently oversees the team’s inside linebackers. Like Horton, Ryan has held the defensive coordinator role for multiple organizations including the Raiders (04-08), Browns (09-10), Cowboys (11-12), and Saints (13-15). Most recently, he served as the Associate head coach/Defense for the Bills in 2016.

Ryan was out of coaching completely after his stint with the Bills, but he has never lacked the personality or football knowledge required of a professional coach. While he does have previous coordinator experience, would he be an ideal fit to replace Manusky?

Even though he does have the desired traits to be a successful coordinator, his defenses in the past have not always performed up to the necessary standards for success. If he was to be selected though, he may have a better shot at developing a unit that does have talent, but may in fact be missing a true leader at coordinator.

To Ryan’s credit, so far in the 2019 season, the team’s inside linebackers are at least showing signs of development. Cole Holcomb, in particular, has been a shining star, which is especially notable considering Holcomb was a Day 3 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
