The Washington Redskins have made a move at the tight end position. They have waived Manasseh Garner, who has been on the roster for parts of the last two seasons.

Following the third day of mandatory minicamp, the Redskins made a roster move at the tight end position. According to the team’s official Twitter account, they waived Manasseh Garner.

Garner was an undrafted free agent out of Pittsburgh that broke into the NFL in 2015. He bounced around to three teams that offseason, suited up for one game with the Buffalo Bills in 2016, and joined the Redskins after impressing during a tryout in May of 2017.

Garner never played a regular season snap for the Redskins. He spent most of his time on the practice squad. His only time on the active roster came during the final week of the ’17 season. He remained on the team’s 90-man roster in 2018, but tore his ACL in the preseason and missed all of last year. He stayed with Washington while trying to come back, but evidently, he didn’t show enough to stay on the roster.

This offseason, Garner did turn 27 and at this point in his career, it didn’t look like he was anything more than potential back-end roster depth. And given that the ‘Skins already had some quality players at tight end including Jordan Reed, Vernon Davis, Jeremy Sprinkle, Matt Flanagan, and JP Holtz, Garner would have been hard-pressed to make the roster. The team has only kept three tight ends for the most part in recent years, and it seems that Flanagan and Holtz are the roster sleepers for this season.

The release of Garner will open up a roster spot for Washington. It will be interesting to see what they do with it. It’s notable that they have been adding and dropping offensive tackles like a deranged fantasy football owner over the course of the past few weeks, so perhaps they will add another body there with Trent Williams’ holdout currently in effect.

Of course, the team did have a couple of tryout players in minicamp — WR Papi White and TE Donald Parham. It’s possible that either could have impressed enough to gain a spot on the team, and Parham did catch a touchdown during Thursday’s practice. Perhaps they see more upside in the undrafted 6-8 rookie out of Stetson, so they may choose to sign him over Garner.

Either way, Garner’s time in Washington appears to be up. We’ll keep you in the loop as to what the corresponding roster move may be for the Redskins.
