Defensive Lineman. Alabama. Quinnen Williams. 2. player. 42.

Nick Bosa is a popular pick with this spot, and for good reason. He’s one of the best edge rushers in this class and the 49ers could use some pass rush help. However, it’s also possible that they could go with Quinnen Williams, who is the best defensive player in this class.

The 49ers seem to like Williams, and it’s easy to see why. He was one of the most disruptive players in college football last season. He was the latest great player in a long line of Alabama defenders, and there’s a chance that he could sneak into the No. 1 slot if the Cardinals opt not to take Kyler Murray.

I had Williams as the pick for the 49ers in the dueling GMs mock that we released earlier this month. Here’s why Williams might fit with the 49ers.

"There’s a chance that Quinnen Williams could be the apple of their eyes. Williams wouldn’t necessarily fill as big a need for the 49ers as Bosa would, but playing Williams along with DeForest Buckner on the interior could be too good to pass up. Williams is arguably the best player in this draft class. He came into his own at Alabama in the wake of Daron Payne’s departure. Williams had a monstrous 71 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, and 8.0 sacks playing on the defensive line at Alabama. He constantly forced his way into the backfield and has an elite first step. He should be able to shoot gaps at the NFL level and wreak havoc as an interior rusher."

If the 49ers opt to go with the best player on the board, that may be Williams. It will either be Williams or Bosa here either way, as both players appear to be top-three locks.
