Alabama. Quinnen Williams. 2. player. 42. . Defensive Lineman

Jacob Camenker: Okay, we’re going to start out by having a little fun here. If Kyler Murray goes off the board with the first pick as we’re expecting, the 49ers will be in position to land one of the best defensive prospects in this draft. Many assume that they are most interested in Nick Bosa, and that could be true.

However, there’s also a chance that Quinnen Williams could be the apple of their eyes. Williams wouldn’t necessarily fill as big a need for the 49ers as Bosa would, but playing Williams along with DeForest Buckner on the interior could be too good to pass up.

Williams is arguably the best player in this draft class. He came into his own at Alabama in the wake of Daron Payne’s departure. Williams had a monstrous 71 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, and 8.0 sacks playing on the defensive line at Alabama. He constantly forced his way into the backfield and has an elite first step. He should be able to shoot gaps at the NFL level and wreak havoc as an interior rusher.

Williams did a lot to back up his tape by blazing a 4.83 in the 40-yard dash at the combine. He also moved extremely well despite his larger size (6-3, 303 pounds) and could be the next strong interior pass rusher to join the NFL ranks. He is well-rounded and should have scheme versatility as well.

It’s quite possible that the 49ers will pursue Bosa with this pick, but Williams still should remain firmly in play, especially in the wake of the trade for Ford. We’ll soon see how taking Williams affects the rest of this GM mock.
