The Redskins have signed eight players to their practice squad, leaving two spots open.

In the span of just twenty-four hours, the Washington Redskins have whittled down their 90-man roster, picking the best 53 of the bunch. Naturally, the Redskins couldn’t keep everyone; there aren’t enough spots for everybody. Luckily, the practice squad provides a module for teams to keep more young, talented players.

The Redskins were able to keep a number of those kinds of players on the active roster. Cam Sims snuck in at wide receiver. Casey Dunn found a way to stick on the offensive line, and Danny Johnson showed more than enough evidence to convince Washington to keep his services around.

That said, those three weren’t the only ones to flash in the offseason. The Redskins found lots of talent across the board in the spring, and they were able to bring some of that talent back on the practice squad today, per D.C. Sports reporter Craig Hoffman.

The eight players signed to the practice squad initially include Kapri Bibbs, Simmie Cobbs, Matt Flanagan, Darvin Kidsy, Kenny Ladler, Cassanova McKinzy, Timon Parris, and JoJo Wicker. Bibbs, in particular, was a player who the team should be happy to have back in tow. He showed promise in the offseason, and with the running back position facing lingering uncertainty, Bibbs is quality insurance.

Other notable additions to the squad include Simmie Cobbs, Kenny Ladler, and JoJo Wicker. Cobbs was a wide receiver who many thought would be drafted in April. Ladler made a name for himself in preseason with a consistent showing through four games, and Wicker has an intriguing skill set on the defensive line.

Notable omissions on the practice squad include Kevin Hogan, J.P. Holtz, and Fish Smithson. Hogan was signed to the Denver Broncos on the waiver wire, taking the place of Paxton Lynch as the team’s third quarterback. Holtz and Smithson, meanwhile, remain unclaimed. Perhaps the Redskins favored Matt Flanagan, with his size and upside.

That said, there are still two open slots on the practice squad, so the Redskins aren’t fully encumbered just yet. With two quarterbacks over 30 years old, look for the Redskins to sign one quarterback. After that, anyone is fair game.
