There was a belief that the Redskins would consider keeping Kevin Hogan on their practice squad following a generally strong preseason performance.

That belief, however, will not come to pass as reality.

Kevin Hogan entered the offseason with the odds against him in Washington. Shortly after starting training camp, the Washington Redskins signed Colt McCoy to an extension, all but extinguishing thoughts that Hogan might beat out McCoy for the backup job.

Still, Hogan had a chance to earn a spot for himself as the team’s third quarterback, but it became apparent that Washington had positions in need of depth elsewhere, and Hogan was growing increasingly expendable.

Nevertheless, Hogan had a solid preseason with the Redskins. It took some time for him to pick up speed, but he put together a solid body of work. Over four games of action, Hogan went 43 for 67, notching 462 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions.

The soon-to-be 26 year old made a strong case for a roster spot. But that roster spot wasn’t with the Redskins. Hogan was cut by the team, and earlier today, he was claimed on the waiver wire by the Denver Broncos, per ESPN’s Field Yates.

Hogan could have a legitimate future in Denver. Case Keenum is the obvious starter, but behind him, Chad Kelly is an unknown at backup, and former first-round pick Paxton Lynch has done nothing to generate a semblance of confidence as a long-term option for the Broncos.

Hogan has more NFL experience than Kelly and is an observably better quarterback than Lynch, even for his own lack of polish. The Broncos, now holstering four quarterbacks, could cut Lynch in favor of Hogan. And Hogan would likely be granted a spot on a roster for the 2018 season. It’s a promising development for an ex-Redskins player who made strides in the offseason.

Washington moved on from Hogan, and Hogan will move on with the Broncos, eliminating himself as a contender for a spot on the Redskins’ practice squad. The Redskins will move forward with two quarterbacks over 30 years old, until further notice.
