The Redskins reportedly signed QB Alek Torgersen to the practice squad, in order to compensate for the loss of Nate Sudfeld.

The Redskins had one spot remaining on the practice squad following today’s early action. While Nico Marley remains available, and would have made for a good addition, the Redskins decided to use their final spot on a quarterback. Former Penn signal caller Alek Torgersen is the new guy in town.

Torgersen, a California native with roots in Norway, had a solid senior season with the Quakers, logging 17 touchdowns to 4 interceptions while maintaining a 66% completion percentage. Torgersen shined in the East-West Shrine Game, but nonetheless went undrafted. The Atlanta Falcons subsequently picked him up, and he’s been on the team up until now.

Torgersen played in limited action in the preseason, and his play was less impressive than his college numbers. Through three games, Torgersen completed 8 of 20 passes for 96 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions. The stats don’t exactly jump out as promising, but Torgersen has good size, standing at around 6-foot-2, 220. While he doesn’t have the height and arm of Sudfeld, Torgersen is mobile, and he better fits the Redskins’ scheme.

The decision to add a quarterback to the practice squad comes with extra weight this year, as the situation surrounding Kirk Cousins’ contract has yet to be resolved. With Colt McCoy remaining the only second option on the roster, Torgersen’s growth suddenly becomes an interesting subplot to the 2017 season. If Cousins leaves in 2018, Torgersen could be poised for an extended role.

This is purely an experimental decision. The Redskins likely failed to claim more prestigious waiver options, such as Kyle Sloter and Brad Kaaya. And yes, they likely tried to claim Sudfeld. But instead, he’s with an NFC East rival.

Washington’s practice squad is now all filled up. Former Redskins, like offensive guard Isaiah Williams, and inside linebacker Nico Marley, are officially on the market. And project quarterback Alek Torgersen is off the books. He’ll be on the Redskins practice squad for the 2017 season. And by simply being signed to the Redskins, Torgersen has become a piece of the future, and whatever it holds.
