It’s never possible to keep everyone. The Redskins know this, just as all other NFL teams do. The Redskins were able to retain several young players on their practice squad today, but some high-profile names have signed elsewhere.

One of the busiest days of the year, teams spend this day of the season scrambling to lock down young and promising players to their practice squad through the waiver claim process. While teams often prioritize their own members when completing this process, some always slip through the cracks and end up going somewhere else. That’s happened to a few big names so far today.

The biggest signing by far is the signing of quarterback Nate Sudfeld by the Philadelphia Eagles. The second-year quarterback out of Indiana showed limited promise for the Redskins, but in the end, the team prioritized defense over offense, and Sudfeld didn’t make the cut. He was one player the Redskins were motivated to keep on the practice squad, but instead, he’ll join an NFC East rival. The Redskins and Eagles play each other in Week 1, and although Sudfeld won’t see any playing time, the reunion will be an odd one.

Aside from Sudfeld, multiple Redskins have moved around so far today. Three will go to the Indianapolis Colts. The AFC South team signed Matt Jones off of waivers, and added Matt Hazel and Joey Mbu to their practice squad. Jones, in particular, should see meaningful snaps this year. Frank Gore is the starter, but he isn’t getting any younger, and behind him, rookie Marlon Mack, although promising, still has a ways to go in his development. Jones could benefit from a new beginning, and the Colts give him just that.

Only one other Redskin has been signed elsewhere. Zach Vigil will join the Bills’ practice squad, effective immediately. The linebacker showed promise on special teams this offseason, but he didn’t do enough to work his way up the totem pole. Another year on the practice squad could be key in his development.
