This matters more than you think.

The Washington Commanders needed to set the right tone this offseason. Pressure is on to bounce back, with head coach Dan Quinn's status as head coach looking more precarious if things don't get on the right track once again.

There is no margin for error. At the same time, the Commanders may have stumbled into something meaningful during their recently concluded mandatory minicamp.

Most teams focus on the established stars expected to play leading roles. Quinn and his staff took a different approach, allocating prominent reps to those on the fringes instead.

It was an interesting approach. But it has plenty of merit.

Dan Quinn gave every player a reason to believe at Commanders minicamp

When you think about it, there is no better time to examine those lower down the depth chart. Some will make the team or the practice squad, and some won't. But what this provides everyone is a crystal clear insight into the staff's demands, the schematic nuances under two new coordinators, and the increased urgency across the board.

That matters.

Quinn acknowledged that this will change at training camp. The franchise cornerstones, big free-agent signings, and high draft picks will take center stage, and rightfully so. But when opportunities also arise for second- or third-string players striving to remain relevant, featuring heavily at minicamp is a solid platform to build on.

This should also benefit the team's decision-makers.

They'll have a good indication of how their roster might look by this point. They will outline strengths and possible weaknesses. If general manager Adam Peters believes more is needed, he has enough spare salary-cap space to strengthen.

It also speaks to the collective mindset Quinn wants to restore in the locker room.

One of the Commanders' biggest strengths behind their rapid rise to the NFC Championship game in 2024 was the brotherhood and everyone pulling in the same direction. That was lost last season as complacency crept into their approach. Everyone went into self-preservation mode, which cannot happen again.

Quinn knows it. Making sure those on the roster bubble knew it as well was imperative.

Bringing everyone together. Ensuring everyone knows they are part of something. Getting everyone believing in their shared goal. These were the objectives, and the Commanders have achieved them.

It might not amount to anything, but it might mean more than fans think. And after things fell completely flat last season, Quinn should not be discredited for thinking outside the box in pursuit of restoring order.

The hard work is just getting started. But the bar has been raised for everyone.

That much is abundantly clear.
