The Washington Commanders have added two wide receivers to improve competition for places this summer. Dyami Brown and Van Jefferson Jr. probably won't move the needle all that much, but general manager Adam Peters is far from done with this unit.
Brandon Aiyuk remains the hot name. Most around the league and in the media believe he'll reunite with quarterback Jayden Daniels in Washington when the San Francisco 49ers eventually release him. Peters will wait, but he won't settle.
And one NFL analyst all but confirmed what fans long suspected about Washington's receiver plans, even if Aiyuk does end up joining the ranks.
Commanders cannot place all their faith in Brandon Aiyuk bouncing back
Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports thought the receiver position was the Commanders' biggest remaining priority after a busy offseason that has seen 14 new players join the club so far. The analyst also thought that Aiyuk's almost foregone conclusion arrival shouldn't be enough. Peters needs more, with Ohio State wideout Carnell Tate chosen by the national writer.
"The Commanders were in on both Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs but ended up with neither. They mostly focused on the defensive side in free agency. The offensive free agents they added -- Dyami Brown and Van Jefferson -- arrived on cheap, one-year deals. Once the 49ers release him, [Brandon] Aiyuk is expected to be the next addition, but Washington could (and should) still do more."
This is pretty common knowledge among Washington fans. Aiyuk will help enormously if his chemistry with Daniels is rekindled and the player returns to his old form after missing the 2025 campaign due to injury. At the same time, the Commanders cannot bet too much on this scenario becoming reality.
Whether it's Tate, who could be a realistic option at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, or someone else a little lower down the pecking order, the Commanders need another dynamic outlet to complement what they already have. And with rumors circling around Terry McLaurin's future beyond 2026, Peters cannot leave anything to chance.
If Aiyuk can produce, it's an added bonus. McLaurin will be the top dog if he stays healthy. Luke McCaffrey and Jaylin Lane are young but unproven. Expecting miracles from Jefferson or Brown is unrealistic. That alone is enough to suggest Peters needs to attack his wideout acquisitions on multiple fronts.
That is imperative as the Commanders look to maximize Daniels' rookie window. This will be Year 3 for the signal-caller, so the stakes are being raised considerably. The best way to unleash his obvious promise is by enhancing the firepower around him.
Daniels has vouched hard for Aiyuk. If the Commanders also draft Tate, he'll have everything needed to excel.
