Commanders face a looming contract dilemma they cannot afford to mishandle

It's a wait-and-see scenario, for now.

Everyone is looking forward to what will hopefully be an impressive bounce-back campaign for the Washington Commanders in 2026. But general manager Adam Peters is always thinking two steps ahead.

Peters is a bigger picture guy. He may have gone all-in last season and failed, but the front-office leader maintained the team's financial flexibility for the future. That was important, both for finding the right reinforcements this offseason and for any players in line for contract extensions.

And for dynamic linebacker Frankie Luvu, there is a looming contract conundrum with significant ramifications.

Commanders and Frankie Luvu could be on a contract collision course

Luvu's first season in Washington was sensational. He was a driving force at the defensive second level, earning second-team All-Pro honors and looking like a legitimate franchise cornerstone for years to come. Unfortunately, things didn't go nearly as well last time around.

The former Washington State standout couldn't reach the same heights, though mitigating circumstances were present. Luvu was forced to play a lot on the defensive edge amid the Commanders' injury crisis. He wasn't comfortable doing so, but he did what was required to help the team.

That speaks volumes about his character. Even so, Peters is a business-first operator who always puts the team's best interests first.

New defensive coordinator Daronte Jones wants Luvu attacking downhill. He'll return to his off-ball role and may even have the green dot with Bobby Wagner no longer around. That should help greatly, but the stakes are high in a contract year.

Luvu is counting $11.29 million against the salary cap in 2026. He's the wrong side of 30, and the Commanders have free-agent signing Leo Chenal, Jordan Magee, and No. 7 pick Sonny Styles under contract in 2027. That only increases the urgency to prove himself worthy of another long-term commitment from the organization.

The Commanders were intent on fortifying the linebacking corps this offseason. A weakness last season could now be an area of strength, and Luvu will be at the heart of it. But make no mistake; he'll need to be in pursuit of a new deal in Washington.

If Luvu returns to anything like his 2024 form, keeping him on the team will be a no-brainer. The Commanders have $62.95 million in available cap space in 2027, with 46 players under contract. Others also need to be paid, but there should be more than enough to make him a decent offer if the performances warrant it.

Hopes are immensely high for Luvu. Jones' scheme looks tailor-made for his explosiveness, aggression, and instincts. If he can dominate and the Commanders make instant defensive improvements, everything else will take care of itself.

That's a win-win for everybody.
