Adam Peters has more freedom than one might expect of a team with only two picks in the first four rounds of the 2026 NFL Draft. That makes the Washington Commanders one of the most fascinating teams to watch in the top 10.
The Commanders are light on assets after trading for left tackle Laremy Tunsil last year. That move went much better than expected, and an aggressive free agency comes with the flexibility to play the board effectively before making a decision.
Picking for need never goes well. Those have diminished for the Commanders, which could lead Peters to be a little bolder. And one NFL analyst believes the No. 7 overall pick could be extremely valuable when push comes to shove.

John Kosko of Pro Football Focus thought building around Jayden Daniels gets a lot easier if the Commanders can hit on this pick. Alternatively, the analyst believes trading down could reap significant rewards to maximize the quarterback's rookie contract before it gets much more expensive to keep around.
"The Commanders have their franchise quarterback in Jayden Daniels, but must continue building around him with youth and depth. The No. 7 overall pick provides significant flexibility to add a high-end offensive lineman, playmaker or defensive contributor.
"Alternatively, trading down could allow Washington to accumulate additional assets and accelerate the roster build. After leaning on veteran additions, the Commanders would benefit from injecting more young talent into the lineup to maximize Daniels’ window."
The options are endless. Finding a trade-down partner might be difficult with very few (if any) quarterbacks expected to be taken in the first round after Fernando Mendoza goes No. 1 to the Las Vegas Raiders. It's not impossible, but Peters could decide to stand pat and take whatever blue-chip prospect can help the Commanders bounce back.
That's not a bad position to be in. And the Commanders don't have to chase anything.
If the Commanders don't get an offer good enough to move back, Peters will take the highest prospect on his board and worry about the rest later. It's what he did last year at No. 29 overall with Josh Conerly Jr., moving him to the right edge to form a bookend tackle tandem with Tunsil. He won't think twice about doing the same again.
That makes the Commanders dangerous.
They have their quarterback. They have an elite left tackle. They have a legitimate No. 1 receiver. They have some decent defensive options after an offseason makeover. Everything still has to come together on the field, but the pieces are slowly falling into place.
And if Peters gets his decision right at No. 7, whatever that may be, the Commanders will get themselves a lot closer.
