After getting some exceptional returns from his first draft class, Washington Commanders fans were eagerly anticipating which talented prospects Adam Peters would bring to the franchise this time around. They had to wait longer than usual at No. 29 overall, which isn't a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination, but it was all worth it.
The Commanders only had five picks heading into the 2025 NFL Draft. That was the sacrifice trading for three Pro Bowl-caliber performers demanded. Unfortunately, it cut the margin for error significantly for Peters during the all-important selection event.
It was a waiting game for the Commanders, but fans were rewarded for their patience after a gift from the football gods fell into their lap.
Commanders make surprising Josh Conerly Jr. pick at No. 29
Washington ended up taking Josh Conerly Jr. at No. 29 overall. The talented offensive tackle doesn't necessarily represent a pre-draft priority, especially considering the Commanders need players who can help their playoff push immediately. He ticks the boxes of a long-term option upon further examination of his flourishing credentials in college.
Fans were clamoring for the Commanders to address some defensive needs early in the draft. There weren't many glaring holes coming into the process, but Conerly certainly removes one complication from Peters' to-do list as part of his long-term plans for progress.
His explosiveness, football IQ, and leadership credentials are traits the Commanders value highly. Couple this with his high ceiling and standout college performance levels, and there's a lot to like about his fit in Washington.
After trading for Laremy Tunsil, this raised a few eyebrows among the fanbase. The Commanders were expected to go with Brandon Coleman and Andrew Wylie on the right-hand side next season, at least until Sam Cosmi is ready to return. Now, that's not exactly set in stone.
Protecting Jayden Daniels was the biggest priority above all else this offseason. This pick is further proof of that.
