Commanders’ first-round pick suddenly looks obvious after major free agency spree

The Commanders need more around Jayden Daniels.

Adam Peters' aggressive free agency was both necessary and welcome. The Washington Commanders had money to spend and plenty of glaring holes to fill. There is a long way to go and more moves to make, but the general manager got off to the best possible start.

The Commanders were bold. Peters didn't manage to secure all his preferred targets, but the roster looks a lot better now than when the 2025 campaign concluded. This has also provided some extra flexibility during the 2026 NFL Draft for good measure.

Nothing should be off the table for Peters at No. 7 overall. The Commanders could continue to strengthen their defense. They could even trade down for additional assets with only two picks in the first four rounds. There is also the option to find a legitimate difference-maker for quarterback Jayden Daniels to depend upon long-term.

Commanders could change their offensive dynamic with Carnell Tate at No. 7 overall

This was the route Eric Edholm of NFL.com took in his latest mock draft. The respected analyst had the Commanders selecting Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate in his latest mock draft, which would give Washington the perfect complement to Terry McLaurin and a potential heir to his throne.

"The Commanders really need a complement to Terry McLaurin. [Carnell] Tate naturally gains easy separation and generates big pass plays for his size, which is the kind of skill set Jayden Daniels could use."

Peters took big swings on Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs before ultimately missing out. The Commanders sealed deals for Dyami Brown and Van Jefferson Jr., but they are expected to be rotational pieces at best. Washington needs a dynamic playmaker capable of impacting proceedings at all three levels of the field, and Tate ticks those boxes.

Tate isn't known for his threat after the catch. But in terms of his ability as a true X wide receiver, he's got everything NFL teams are looking for. Playing opposite Jeremiah Smith was advantageous. However, that does not detract from the immense physical attributes he brings to the table.

He is a fluid mover with accomplished routes and exceptional spatial awareness. Tate just makes things happen, so it's not hard to see why the Commanders would be intrigued. But if Peters targets the wideout, it'll be an anxious wait before Washington goes on the clock.

There is a chance Tate will be taken before. The Cleveland Browns look like a solid fit at No. 6 overall. They are desperate for another prolific receiver to put alongside Jerry Jeudy, and the Buckeyes' prospect is the consensus best in this year's class.

But if he is available, it might be a difficult proposition for Peters to turn down.
