Updated Commanders 2025 NFL Draft picks after Marshon Lattimore trade
By Dean Jones
Adam Peters is the calculated front-office figure capable of spearheading a franchise renaissance. The Washington Commandeers honed in on the respected executive early in their search. Based on his efforts since securing the general manager job, it's not hard to see why.
With the Commanders sitting at 7-2 and further ahead than most anticipated, Peters pivoted accordingly. He took some assets and turned them into stud cornerback Marshon Lattimore before the trade deadline.
The Commanders sent third-round, fourth-round, and sixth-round selections to the New Orleans Saints for Lattimore and a fifth-rounder. Peters thought it was a risk worth taking - something that helps Washington's defense now while also coming with long-term upside for good measure.
This sent excitement through the roof among Washington's fanbase. They know something special is building with Peters at the helm. To be in this sort of strong position so soon into such a comprehensive rebuild is nothing short of astonishing.
And they're just getting started.
Despite giving up capital to secure the services of Lattimore - a four-time Pro Bowler and one of the league's most accomplished shutdown cornerbacks - the Commanders are still in a healthy position heading into Peters' second recruitment period. This is another sign that every move is being made with the bigger picture in mind.
Commanders 2025 NFL Draft picks after Marshon Lattimore trade
The Commanders have $104.3 million in available salary-cap space, with Lattimore set to count $18 million without an extension or contract restructure. According to Tankathon, they also have seven selections at their disposal during the 2025 NFL Draft to further strengthen the ranks.
- 1st round pick
- 2nd round pick
- 3rd round pick (via Dolphins)
- 5th round pick (via Saints)
- 6th round pick
- 7th round pick (via Falcons)
- 7th round pick (via Eagles)
This will likely change before the college selection process begins next spring. Trades will be made over the three-day process. Peters could also dispose of more players who don't fit into the team's vision. Looking at how things have unfolded up to now, cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. and defensive tackle Jonathan Allen look like primary candidates to be sent elsewhere in 2025.
The Commanders are a better team with Lattimore, there's no getting away from that. Peters felt he had a surplus of draft picks to help the team right now. His outstanding first draft class provides confidence the same trend will continue next year and beyond.
Peters knows what he's doing. This might be his first time as a general manager, but he's been instrumental behind the scenes with contenders such as the San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots, and Denver Broncos. He's also got three Super Bowl rings to show for his efforts.
Washington isn't at that level yet. But if Peters keeps this up, it won't be for much longer before this sleeping giant is back among the challengers.
