Trey Amos' status is causing some mild concern among the fan base. The Washington Commanders haven't seen the cornerback on the field this offseason as he continues his recovery from a fractured fibula. He is also dealing with a soft tissue problem, so it's not hard to see why the staff is being cautious.
Head coach Dan Quinn said Thursday will be the next big assessment day for Amos. The Commanders will find out how far along he is and what more he needs to do to get cleared. The 2025 second-round pick deserves a little bit of luck, but Washington will not give him the green light until there is 100 percent conviction.

Nobody is probably more frustrated than Amos. He was spotted running onto the practice field to watch his teammates in action for the first day in pads. There was also no sleeve or knee brace on the injured leg, which was a small detail but encouraging nonetheless.

Amos promises to be a big part of the Commanders' plans this season. The former Ole Miss standout flashed some encouraging ability in coverage as a rookie. He's got the size, length, and physicality to fit well into Daronte Jones' schematic concepts, but getting some work in over the summer is imperative.
Just when that'll be should become clearer a little later in the week. And everyone will be hoping for good news.
Injury problems ravaged the Commanders' hopes in 2025. The vibes may have been off long before, but the number of issues with key personnel didn't exactly help. Things are looking a little better on that front now, and if Amos can get cleared in the near future, that'll be another outstanding asset for Jones to depend upon.
Obviously, it's a wait-and-see scenario. The Commanders want Amos back quickly, but they are not going to take any unnecessary risks.
Nor should they.
There is a little more than a month before Washington takes on the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1. That remains the key objective for Amos, so keeping the bigger picture in mind is key.
If it takes a little longer to get involved at training camp, so be it. The Commanders cannot afford any setbacks when he's come this far. Amos is reportedly making some encouraging progress, but there are still hurdles to overcome.
For the Commanders to make the defensive improvements anticipated this season, they need their young guns firing on all cylinders. Amos is among them, and it seems his long-awaited return to the practice field is not too far away now.
And when that happens, it's sure to give everyone a massive lift at an important time.
