Tony Pollard trade could give Commanders the lead back they badly need

This might just work.

The NFL trade deadline is fast approaching, and the Washington Commanders must decide whether to buy, sell, or do a bit of both before November 10.

As for the running back group, someone like Tony Pollard could be a significant coup if the price is right.

Washington's offensive backfield has been decimated, with Jacory Croskey-Merritt on injured reserve and Jeremy McNichols now joining him. It's Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler holding down the fort, while Craig Reynolds remains on the practice squad and Robert Henry Jr. was just re-added.

Commanders should consider trading for Tony Pollard if the price is right

The Commanders are currently featuring two receiving backs with no every-down threats. But Pollard can change that.

Pollard has been one of the league's most underrated backs for years running. The former Dallas Cowboys dual-threat is quietly on pace for his fifth consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season, and he's on a Tennessee Titans team that's going nowhere.

After spending the early part of his career as largely a third-down specialist, Pollard has morphed into a bell cow for the Titans. This season, Tennessee has effectively removed him from the passing game entirely, with 133 rushing attempts but only 14 receptions for the former Memphis star.

Despite that, Pollard continues to produce. And given that the Titans have already traded Pro Bowl defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons to the Chicago Bears, they could be open for business.

Pollard is exactly what Washington needs. The Titans would also be wise to see what they can get for him, especially in the final season of the three-year deal he signed in 2024.

Commanders would instantly solve a big problem with Tony Pollard trade

It's uncertain how long Croskey-Merritt will miss, and even when he returns, he's vulnerable enough to be pushed into a lesser role.

The 2025 seventh-round success story is still a long-term part of Washington's plans. But right now, the Commanders have an extremely winnable NFC East title to push for.

Pollard would give Washington an experienced lead back who still has some tread on his tires and can be used in any situation. And considering his age, he probably won't cost a whole lot.

The Commanders' offensive line makes Washington's situation less than ideal for any running back, but if Pollard can put up strong production in Tennessee, he can do the same in D.C.

And if he doesn't, you're only committed to him for half a season. After that, general manager Adam Peters can move off him quickly if the production doesn't warrant another financial commitment.

This is as perfect a fit as there could be.

If the Commanders want to bolster their running back room at the deadline, Pollard should be the focus of Peters' plans.
