This was blown out of proportion.

There are very few, if any, more popular players in the Washington Commanders' locker room than Tress Way. The three-time Pro Bowl punter is part of the franchise's fabric, and he's now extending his 12-year journey with the organization after signing a new one-year deal way before free agency.

This news was extremely well-received by fans and experts alike. It even prompted a positive response from another impending free agent on social media — something that led one team insider to a conclusion that sparked a heated debate.

Deebo Samuel Sr. shared the Commanders' post about extending Way on Instagram. It's a sign of his respect for the veteran, shared by everyone on the team. Whether it means anything more than that is anyone's guess, but it didn't stop Lynnell Willingham of Westwood One Sports from lending his thoughts to the topic.

Deebo Samuel 's social post about Tress Way sent Commanders insider into detective mode

Willingham thought this could be a sign that the Commanders are going to offer Samuel the same courtesy with another deal this offseason. He also highlighted the wideout's previous relationship with Brandon Aiyuk — a highly rumored target if he's released by the San Francisco 49ers — as something else that makes another contract seem feasible.

Samuel could get an extension if the money works for all parties. But this social media post doesn't confirm anything.

Players do this sort of thing all the time. It could be someone they currently share a locker room with, or someone with whom they've developed a strong bond at a previous stop. Samuel was just showing Way some deserved love, and that's about it. Anything less is just looking a little too much into this sort of thing.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with Samuel this offseason. The Commanders got some good returns from the versatile weapon after his trade to the club, which cost nothing more than a fifth-round pick. At the same time, he's now over 30, and there is a desperate need for Washington to get younger and more explosive in David Blough's new offensive scheme.

Samuel will have a market if the Commanders don't make him an acceptable offer. It could go either way, in all honesty, and one social media post celebrating Way's new contract doesn't change that fact.

This is the time of year for rumors, hearsay, speculation, and everything in between. Willingham's claim was on the more unusual side, and even if Samuel is rewarded for his productive 2025 campaign, this doesn't provide a clue one way or the other.
