When the Washington Commanders had a chance to select linebacker Sonny Styles at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, general manager Adam Peters didn't hesitate. And he brings much more than just tone-setting impact at the defensive second level.

There is nothing Styles cannot do on the field. This is a unique player for defensive coordinator Daronte Jones to build around. His seamless transition over Washington's offseason program raised optimism, and the former Ohio State standout already looks firmly entrenched in a starting role.

Styles isn't settling. He knows the expectations of being a top 10 pick, and he is eager to repay the Commanders' faith. There will be some ups and downs in Year 1 of his professional career, but it would be deeply disappointing if the first-rounder didn't make a lasting contribution.

Just how will Styles achieve this? And how will the Commanders maximize his immense skill set? I put on the tape to get a closer look.

What Sonny Styles really brings to the Washington Commanders' defense

Versatility

Jones' scheme will be fast, aggressive, and creative. Styles ticks those boxes and more, but it's his versatility that could be the most impactful benefit for Washington.

Styles boasts the tools to thrive in almost any formation. Whether Jones runs a 3-4 or a 4-3 base, depending on the situation, the first-year pro is adaptable enough to switch gears accordingly. Unlike the aging Bobby Wagner, he isn't stuck in between the tackles. This is a legitimate sideline-to-sideline force against the run who can rush the passer and also excel in coverage.

There is just no telling what having someone like this can do for the Commanders. Styles' film with the Buckeyes shows a composed, athletic player who grew in stature in every game. And no matter what Jones throws at him, he will be able to cope.

Communication

Though it was clear Wagner's powers were declining, his cerebral approach and exceptional communication techniques will be sorely missed. However, there is hope that Styles can fill the void.

One only has to look at how his former Buckeyes teammates spoke about his ability to relay information under pressure to see that. Styles' tape is littered with making strong adjustments, ensuring other defenders are in the correct positions, all while worrying about what's going on in front of him.

This doesn't get the headlines, especially compared to his exceptional athleticism, but it'll be incredibly important for the scheme Jones is projected to run.

The system will be interchangeable. Alterations will be made quickly, and there is no time for hesitancy. Styles might only be a rookie, but he's not carrying himself like one. There is even a chance that head coach Dan Quinn gives him the green dot on defense, and he is more than ready for the responsibility.

Dynamism and Anticipation

This is all over Styles' tape. Not many 6-foot-5, 244-pound linebackers move like this. There are no wasted movements. Everything is smooth and poised. It's almost effortless, which stems from unique athletic traits and the football intelligence to anticipate what's unfolding from play to play.

It's the perfect combination.

Styles reads the game well. He's got the closing speed to reach the contact point before oncoming runners generate any momentum. His flawless tackling technique and violent tendencies leave a fierce mark. As previously mentioned, this applies to all phases of playing the position.

The Commanders placed an emphasis on youth, explosiveness, and speed. That's why Styles was the no-brainer pick. With Frankie Luvu, Jordan Magee, and free-agent signing Leo Chenal also eager to make their mark, Washington's linebacking corps has a dominant look to it.

Styles will make everything tick. And he's got the tools to completely shift Washington's defensive outlook under Jones' guidance.
