Reported Diontae Johnson asking price is enticing for resurgent Commanders
By Dean Jones
Everything seems to be going right for the Washington Commanders this season. Momentum was firmly on their side heading into Week 8 against the Chicago Bears. After a miraculous ending, this reached levels not seen for decades.
Something special is happening. The Commanders are 6-2 and firmly on course for a postseason berth. The energy among the fanbase is high and the culture shift across the organization has been a revelation. An opportunity knocks, so general manager Adam Peters should be focused on incomings before the trade deadline if the right opportunity comes along.
Peters won't do anything too drastic. He's got a sustainable plan in place and won't jeopardize it if there is any semblance of doubt. But if the Commanders could add another proven performer before the November 5 cut-off point, it'll only enhance their chances of winning the NFC East.
The Commanders are reportedly examining wide receiver possibilities. They inquired about Marquez Valdes-Scantling before he signed for the New Orleans Saints. Options are becoming increasingly limited in the trade market, but a recent report regarding the asking price for Diontae Johnson might entice Peters when push comes to shove.
Commanders could reportedly get Diontae Johnson for a mid-round pick
Adam Schefter of ESPN believes the Carolina Panthers will trade Johnson by the deadline. The senior insider also revealed that the organization is looking for a mid-round selection in return for the Pro Bowl pass-catcher, who was acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason.
"The Panthers already have received multiple inquiries on Johnson, and sources believe Carolina is seeking a midround draft pick in return for a player who this season, despite playing in a struggling offense, has 30 receptions for 357 yards and three touchdowns. Some sources believe it's only a question of where Johnson winds up before the trade deadline. Johnson is 28 and due to make $3.5 million for the rest of the season -- making him both younger and cheaper than some of the other potentially available wide receivers."

Would Peters consider giving up a fourth-round selection for Johnson? It's hard to say one way or another, but he'd be a tremendous addition to a passing attack that could use one more productive weapon for rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels to utilize.
Johnson is an exceptional route runner who can make things happen if left in one-on-one situations. Considering the presence of Terry McLaurin on the opposite side, the vertical threat of Noah Brown, and the reliable threat of tight end Zach Ertz, this would be a nightmare for opposing defenses to counteract.
The Commanders could easily afford Johnson's remaining salary in 2024. There is the small matter of the former third-round pick out of Toledo being out of contract next spring, so this move could be a one-year rental if he fails to meet expectations.
Carolina should be a willing seller. They are 1-7 and need to stockpile assets heading into another pivotal offseason in 2025. Adam Thielen is another possibility, but Johnson is young enough at 28 to fit into Peters' long-term vision for the next few years.
It'll be interesting to see how Peters approaches the next week. He won't do anything rash that's for sure. At the same time, this is a chance to strengthen the roster if value can be sought.
The Commanders are not one player away from winning a Super Bowl. They might be one player away from winning the division and reaching the playoffs.
That's for Peters to decide.
