Rasul Douglas joining the Washington Commanders in good time before training camp was met with widespread approval. And there is one player who could benefit more than anyone from his presence.

Everyone knew the Commanders needed more in their cornerback room. It was seen as a threadbare unit behind the projected starting trio, and Douglas provides relief. While he is on the wrong side of 30 now, he's experienced with the solid production to match. Standing out on the Miami Dolphins defense last season was difficult, but he managed to do so.

Douglas is a big body at 6-foot-2 with the length and athleticism to make things difficult for opposing wide receivers. In terms of size and physicality, there is only one other corner with the same set of traits poised to play a key role. And second-year star Trey Amos would be wise to lean on the new signing heavily to aid his own progression.

Rasul Douglas can help Commanders rising star Trey Amos take the next step

The Commanders couldn't believe their luck when Amos fell to them late in the second round last year. His imposing summer and early-campaign flashes were encouraging. Unfortunately, a broken fibula ended his season just when real momentum was being generated.

Amos is reportedly making good progress, though the Commanders are taking things cautiously. The Ole Miss product being on the field in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles is the primary objective. And having someone like Douglas around for counsel and to teach a few extra intricacies of playing the position effectively will only help his cause.

While Amos is accomplished in his own right, and promises to be far more integral to Washington's cause, he is still young and looking to make his way.

He's a willing learner, eager to make the most of every available resource in pursuit of improvement. And after the Commanders let some established veteran corners walk this offseason, Douglas' presence will be vital.

General manager Adam Peters moved away from signing aging veterans past their prime this offseason. Douglas might be older than some acquisitions, but he's far from a spent force. He's got the talent and proven consistency to play a key role on the rotation. If he can also help Amos take the next step in his development, that will have a lasting impact long after he leaves the club.

The Commanders thought Amos had the tools to be a franchise cornerstone. Douglas might be more of a short-term fix, but his influence on the young corners in Washington should stand the test of time.

And if this becomes reality, Douglas' arrival will be a great piece of business.
