The Washington Commanders are moving forward into an exciting new defensive era under Daronte Jones. But for general manager Adam Peters, the search for ways to improve the squad should never stop.
But one potential cut candidate who would have been an option in the trenches now looks like it won't happen.
It wasn't hard to find speculation linking defensive lineman Arik Armstead with an early departure from the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason. Money was tight, and the $14.48 million saved from a post-June 1 release led most to draw their own conclusions. But the AFC South club has held firm.
Commanders won't get the chance to sign Arik Armstead even if they wanted to
These rumors didn't go unnoticed by Armstead. He revealed that it was impossible to ignore the hearsay and speculation regarding his future. Now it has seemingly been resolved, he's focused on helping the Jaguars build on their AFC South title triumph.
“That’s the nature of the business. It’s impossible to ignore the chatter. Everyone has social media and there is no ignoring anything and even if you’re not on social media, somebody will tell you about it or ask you about it. My focus is being my best self and the best player I can be. That’s all I can control."
The NFL is fluid, and things can change very quickly. But unless there is a dramatic shift in course, Armstead will be on the Jaguars in 2026.
Whether the Commanders would have been interested in Armstead is anyone's guess. They have confidence in their defensive front, with Jones set to switch Washington's unit to a 3-4 base front. Daron Payne, Javon Kinlaw, and free-agent signing Tim Settle Jr. will likely start, with Johnny Newton being tabbed as a potential breakout candidate in Year 3 of his professional career.
Options are relatively threadbare aside from that. Armstead would have been a useful addition to the rotation, certainly an upgrade over the likes of Shy Tuttle and D.J. Davidson. But if the Commanders do eventually decide that more is required, they'll have to look elsewhere.
Armstead can still play. The Jaguars obviously feel like his experience will be an asset while Ruke Orhorhoro and rookie Albert Regis continue to make strides. If the young duo prove their worth in 2026, the veteran will be free to take his chances elsewhere in free agency.
As for the Commanders? They have other pressing priorities than defensive line depth right now. Wide receiver and cornerback would arguably take priority if Peters wants to add more. He may also be pleased enough with the roster as it stands heading into training camp.
Either way, Armstead seems to be staying put in Jacksonville. And that seems like a smart call.
