After one of the most eventful offseasons in franchise history, the Washington Commanders conclude their preseason engagements with a warmup game against the New England Patriots. With some established figures expected to be missing for the clash - including rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels - this represents a final chance for those lower down the pecking order to stake one last claim for involvement during the 2024 campaign.
New general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn will have a good indication of what more is needed and how things stand with final cuts on the immediate horizon. The Commanders' decision to trade wide receiver Jahan Dotson means everyone should be nervously looking over their shoulders. There is no sentiment attached to the decision-making process. Those in power will do what's right for the organization regardless of previous standing.
Quinn said there is plenty to play for in Washington's preseason finale at Commanders Field. The former Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator revealed there were around 10 position battles yet to be decided, adding that places will be given on merit and how they've performed in a highly competitive environment created by the coaching staff.
"There's like a razor-thin line to stand on … It's always a hard conversation for either ball player, whether it's a veteran or the rookie, but at the end of it, we'll always decide on the competitive nature of it, what we've seen and make the decision from there."
