Chase Young's future with Commanders

Even though the Washington Commanders opted not to pick up Chase Young's fifth-year option, those in power have not lost all faith in the defensive end. Trade rumors before the 2023 NFL Draft came to nothing, but this is a precarious situation considering Montez Sweat is also heading into a contract year.

Giving Sweat and Young lucrative extensions isn't the best way to go about building a competitive roster. The Commanders have a significant amount committed to Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen on the defensive line interior, so this complication was always a possibility given how many first-round selections Washington's allocated to its front in recent years.

Some still believe Young might be shipped out before the season. But according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated via ESPN Radio and Brendan Sugrue from The Bears Wire, it would take a whopping offer for the Commanders to consider moving on from the No. 2 overall selection in 2020.

"Albert Breer tells Kap and J Hood the Commanders are NOT shopping Chase Young. He did say if a team put together an enticing offer they may listen, but it doesn't sound like he's available right now."

What a bumper offer might look like that could tempt Washington at this stage of the preparation period is anyone's guess. One suspects it might have to be something in the region of a first and second-round pick to provoke a discussion, which doesn't appear likely given the edge rusher's recent injury history.
