Commanders big date with Ben Johnson arrives

It's no surprise to see Ben Johnson emerge as one of the leading head coaching candidates this year. His reputation has only flourished further this season after spurning multiple advances last year. With preparations wrapping up for the Detroit Lions' divisional round clash against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he's got no fewer than four virtual interviews lined up over the next two days.

The Washington Commanders are thought to be extremely high on Johnson. They'll get the chance to find out more about the progressive play-caller and pitch their case during a virtual meeting on Friday. This could lay the foundations for an in-person interview and potential appointment in the not-too-distant future.

Washington isn't alone in coveting Johnson. The Carolina Panthers are anticipated to make a bold bid and also meet with him today. The Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Chargers - two more intriguing destinations - speak to the offensive coordinator on Saturday.

If it was this time last year, the Commanders would have almost no hope of securing Johnson looking at the competition around the league for his services. But with Josh Harris' ownership group leading the charge and general manager Adam Peters' ambitious plans for the football operation, it's an easy sell.
