Commanders to assess other front office staff

Adam Peters has a big job on his hands. The Washington Commanders are a blank canvas of sorts. They have some core foundational pieces in place, but it promises to be a busy offseason of transactions and changes to finally get this storied franchise on an upward trajectory.

While the primary focus shifts to finding the right head coach, Peters will also be tasked with assessing those currently holding positions of power within the front office according to John Keim of ESPN. This includes ex-general manager Martin Mayhew, who's worked with the new arrival previously during their time together in San Francisco.

"Peters will be the lead football executive under Harris and play a key role in hiring Washington's next coach. He'll also evaluate the current front office, including Martin Mayhew, who served as the general manager the past three years. Mayhew worked with Peters for four years in San Francisco. Mayhew was a vice president of player personnel his last two years with the 49ers. Former Washington coach Ron Rivera, who held the top power on the football side, hired Mayhew as well as assistant general manager Marty Hurney in 2021."

Peters will likely want to bring his people on board to ensure a smooth transition. Mayhew came under fire for Washington's lack of progress - but one must also consider Ron Rivera had the final say on personnel. As for Marty Hurney? He's a fierce loyalist of the departed head coach, so it would be a shock if the Commanders kept him around.
