This one could go either way.

The Washington Commanders need their new signings to hit the ground running in 2024. New general manager Adam Peters turned over almost 50 percent of his roster in pursuit of brighter fortunes for this struggling franchise. That doesn't guarantee success, but it's not a bad place to start.

There is much more work ahead for Peters, he'll be the first to admit that. But if the more experienced figures acquired throughout a frantic recruitment period make an immediate difference, it will set the Commanders up nicely during Year 1 of head coach Dan Quinn's tenure.

One of the most established veterans came into the organization relatively early. Zach Ertz signed a one-year deal to reunite with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. This is nothing more than a short-term arrangement, but one that can help rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels enormously if the tight end has something left in the tank.

Ertz made a positive start over early offseason workouts. Coaches, players, and media members were gushing in their praise of the three-time Pro Bowler. This came as a result of outstanding on-field production and a willingness to help younger tight ends looking to follow in his footsteps.

Hopes are high that Ertz can make a big impression if he gets a clear run of luck on the health front. Unfortunately, that's not an opinion shared by everybody.

Zach Ertz named as Commanders' biggest bust candidate in 2024

David Kenyon from The Bleacher Report named Ertz as Washington's biggest bust candidate in 2024. The analyst thought his advancing years and lack of dynamic threat after the catch meant things are currently hanging precariously for the veteran until proven otherwise.

"Zach Ertz has reliable hands. For rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, that will be a positive in a safety outlet. At this point of Ertz's career, however, that's about as positive as it gets. He hardly generates any yards after the catch and is no longer a high-volume target."

Nobody is expecting Ertz to generate 100-plus targets. The last time he had this volume was 2021. Washington needs to pick and choose their moments. Kingsbury knows better than most what he can or cannot do at this stage of his career. The Commanders also acquired a promising young tight end to potentially take over the No. 1 spot as the campaign progresses.

Ben Sinnott came on board as the No. 53 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. He's got the tools needed to become a total package at the tight end spot with some additional refinement. The Commanders are confident he can develop quickly en route to prominent involvement right out of the gate.

This would be the best-case scenario for all involved, Ertz included. He knows the situation and is putting the team first. He's also confident that this move can help prolong his career after things turned sour with the Arizona Cardinals last time around.

It would be a surprise if Ertz ended up being a bust. However, it couldn't be dismissed entirely given his age, injury history, and regressing production.

Hopefully, Kingsbury's presence provides the spark needed to galvanize Ertz's career and help the Commanders' offense thrive under Daniels' talented young guidance.
