7 Commanders rookies who can help themselves most at 2024 camp
By Dean Jones
Ben Sinnott - Commanders TE
It's all changed in the Washington Commanders' tight end room this offseason. Zach Ertz came in as a short-term veteran option after Logan Thomas' expected departure ahead of time. Those in power also took a longer-term option when Ben Sinnott became the No. 53 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Commanders have high hopes for Sinnott, and with good reason. He's got the athletic credentials to be the complete package with some extra refinement. Comparisons to George Kittle are a lofty bar for which to aim. If everything goes well over camp, it would be a surprise if those in power didn't get the former Kansas State standout involved right out of the gate.
Sinnott can do it all. He's a superb blocking asset either in line or at the second level. There's also a lot to like about his improving route-running, body control in contested catch situations, and ability to generate yards after the catch.
He can be rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels' security blanket for the next decade. This can happen immediately if Sinnott impresses enough during drills and the preseason - something that will enhance confidence in his chances of coping well with the high-caliber NFL standards.
Dominique Hampton - Commanders S
The Commanders have enough quality within their safety department in 2024. This is despite not offering Kamren Curl a new deal in free agency, allowing the former seventh-rounder to depart for the Los Angeles Rams with little fanfare attached.
Jeremy Chinn looks like a player tailor-made to thrive in Dan Quinn's creative schematic concepts. Jeremy Reaves re-signed despite last season's injury worries. Washington also spent a sixth-round selection on Dominique Hampton to further strengthen their ranks.
Hampton comes into the NFL after helping the Washington Huskies go on a memorable run to the college football national championship game. He's got the size and big-hitting mentality Quinn looks for in his backend players. There's also his high-level football IQ and leadership qualities, which are impressive and enabled an impressive transition to the nation's capital.
Watching how Hampton's role evolves during camp - especially compared to others vying for backup reps in the safety unit - will be key. If the defensive back remains consistent and takes advantage of opportunities when they arrive during Washington's preseason engagements, he could have a bigger role than initially anticipated.
