Pro No. 1

Commanders get another elite weapon for Jayden Daniels

Terry McLaurin has almost been flying solo since he was drafted in 2019. The wide receiver put up significant numbers despite the carousel of quarterbacks and the lack of weapons around him in the wideout room. It's early days, but things are changing thanks to the presence of Jayden Daniels.

The No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft looks like a superstar. Those in power thought as much during their pre-draft assessments and he's wasted no time in proving them right with exceptional poise, unbelievable accuracy, and the ability to shine brightest in the most pressurized moments.

This was always going to be a long-term investment, but the Heisman Trophy winner out of LSU looks more than capable of leading the Commanders on an immediate surge into contention if the same trend continues. That's why general manager Adam Peters is probably looking for the right reinforcements to help Daniels along the way.

Placing Davante Adams opposite McLaurin would instantly become among the best wide receiver duos in the NFL. He's an elite route-runner capable of taking over a game when in the mood. He's 32 years old and arguably past the peak of his powers, but this would be a major statement of intent from the Commanders - one that can help Daniels take that next step.

Con No. 2

Adam Peters' long-term plans

General manager Adam Peters has made no secret of his plans for the Commanders. This is a long-term franchise enhancement to build the foundation for sustained success. That doesn't change because Washington managed to win three of its first four contests under the new regime.

Peters wants to build through the draft and supplement any remaining needs in free agency. The changes were substantial and necessary in equal measure throughout his first offseason at the helm. He also managed to stockpile selections after disposing of wide receiver Jahan Dotson and defensive tackle John Ridgeway III shortly before the campaign.

Giving up what the Las Vegas Raiders want for Davante Adams - reportedly a second-round selection and more - goes away from that ethos considerably. The former second-round pick out of Fresno State is still regarded as one of the league's best pass-catchers. However, the Commanders are moving with more more cautious and business-first model under Peters.

Had this been under the previous owner, Adams coming to Washington would have been likelier. Peters is moving with much more conviction. Although it couldn't be dismissed entirely, it would be a shocking turn of events at this stage of his ambitious project.
