5 critical observations from Commanders 2024 training camp Day 5

Jeremy Chinn continues to impress
Dan Quinn is looking to reinstall some physicality and energy to the Washington Commanders' defense. This was a toothless unit last season despite boasting some outstanding players. Some notable additions coupled with the outstanding staff hires seem to be having the desired effect so far.
Jeremy Chinn is one of the more intriguing signings made by the Commanders this offseason. The versatile defensive weapon's career fizzled out with the Carolina Panthers after he became an afterthought in Ejiro Evero's 3-4 defensive system. He was eager for a change of scenery and reportedly turned down more money from the Pittsburgh Steelers to link up with Quinn in the nation's capital.
Chinn looked like a superstar after his rookie campaign in 2020. Getting back to this form is the primary objective as the Southern Illinois product looks to silence some increasing doubters. There's also the small matter of a potential long-term extension on the horizon if he thrives in a different environment.
It's still early in the process, but there's a lot to like about the way Chinn's applied himself over camp so far. The Commanders are starting him on the backend alongside Quan Martin. This is a highly athletic and physical safety tandem capable of making a significant difference.
Chinn's been incredibly active all over the field during scrimmages according to those in attendance. He made an encouraging play in coverage on Day 5 - which has been his one big criticism since entering the league - and his outstanding instincts have been on full display to raise encouragement about the player's impact under Quinn's exceptional guidance.
Whitt needs his defensive backs to hit within his expansive system. That's something Chinn has no trouble with, so this could be a match made in heaven when it's all said and done.
Competition is high within the safety room despite the Commanders not offering Kamren Curl a new deal. Based on initial camp impressions, Chinn is emerging as the top dog.
