Extra spice was in the air on Day 5 of Washington Commanders training camp practice. Players and coaches have eagerly anticipated this session - the first with full pads on - which always brings more intensity and physicality. It's also a great way for Dan Quinn and his staff to evaluate where this roster is and what more could be needed before the regular season arrives.

Quinn highlighted the need for his players to remain disciplined as hits get bigger and emotions reach boiling point. The head coach wants his group to stay poised no matter the situation - something he believes can serve them well when the time comes to lock horns with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1.

Practice was a little shorter than usual, which is understandable considering it's been months since players donned pads. Fans still got to see some exciting action with a few notable storylines attached as preparations for the upcoming campaign gather pace.

With this in mind, here are five crucial observations from Day 5 of Washington's training camp in Ashburn.

Critical observations from Day 5 of Commanders 2024 training camp

Johnny Newton's progress

It was surprising to almost everyone when Johnny Newton passed his physical and participated in the first day of practice. The formidable defensive lineman worked exceptionally hard to recover from foot surgeries this offseason. Those in power are still erring on the side of caution, but the second-round selection's progress is extremely encouraging.

Dan Quinn provided an update on Newton before the Washington Commanders took to the field for their first padded practice. The head coach stated there are no limitations on the Illinois product, but he's not quite ready to take part in team scrimmages.

Quinn thought this would come in the not-too-distant future. Newton is chomping at the bit to impose himself in pursuit of prominent involvement next season. But taking every possible precaution at this stage is the correct approach.

Once Newton gets the all-clear to participate in team scrimmages, the Commanders can see what a three-man defensive front consisting of the rookie, Jonathan Allen, and Daron Payne looks like. That's a mouth-watering proposition.
