Commanders' sloppier day on offense

No position group is going to have it completely their way over camp. There will be good days and bad. One will get the upper hand over the other. That proved to be the case on Day 3 of Washington Commanders training camp.

The offense endured a sloppier session than usual. Jayden Daniels threw the first interception of camp when veteran cornerback Michael Davis got down low to secure the pick. Not the end of the world, but it's a sign for the No. 2 pick that the margins will be much slimmer in the pros.

Marcus Mariota didn't fare any better. He displayed hesitancy under center for the first time based on reports from those in attendance. The signal-caller threw two passes into the dirt and just didn't seem like himself for the most part.

It wasn't just the quarterbacks going through complications. Wide receiver Jahan Dotson and running back Brian Robinson Jr. were credited with drops throughout a lackluster spell from the offense. Not ideal, but it's better to get the issues out now rather than when there's more on the line during the regular season.

The Commanders' defense is no slouch after some outstanding additions in free agency and the draft. Doing battle over camp is going to make both units better. We haven't even got to the best part yet - padded practices - so don't expect anybody to be giving an inch before the time for final cuts arrives.

Things are not going to be perfect initially. The Commanders are installing new schematics under offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. Everyone is familiarizing themselves with new roles and new teammates. It'll take time, but that's to be expected after drastic changes for the better.

It was a rough day for the offense. There will be more tough times ahead. But refining the little things and ridding this team of costly errors now is going to do their hopes good when the stakes get much higher.
