Emmanuel Forbes Jr. bulks up

Emmanuel Forbes Jr. is getting a crash course in improved standards and enhanced development over training camp. The cornerback didn't enjoy the best of starts to life with the Washington Commanders last season. He was dangerously underprepared by the coaching staff and paid a heavy price occupying responsibilities he wasn't ready for.

Forbes knows he's held to a higher standard than most as a first-round pick. He's also working immensely hard to silence some ongoing doubters. This all starts by getting in optimum physical shape to thrive under the guidance of head coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr.

Quinn revealed that Forbes had put on between 15-18 pounds this offseason to avoid the complications that blighted his first year in a professional environment. The former Mississippi State ballhawk confirmed it was 17 pounds when probed, which is a big positive providing it doesn't take away from his exceptional athleticism.

This is great news for the Commanders. Forbes was bullied constantly by more physically dominant wideouts throughout his rookie baptism of fire. Adding some extra muscle mass should reduce the risk of the same occurring again. This would be nothing short of disastrous for Washington in 2024.

The coaching staff is putting Forbes against Pro Bowl wide receiver Terry McLaurin frequently during drills. Testing his skills versus one of the league's most consistent pass-catchers is only going to make things easier when the real action arrives.

Forbes has been holding his own so far according to reports. Matching McLaurin every step of the way when the pads go on will be much tougher, but the No. 16 overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft is finally starting to build some positive momentum.

Washington still believes in Forbes. Quinn and Whitt have proven credentials with defensive back development. Hopefully, this is a recipe for success and the corner can thrive next season.
