Commanders took through Curtis Hodges

Logan Thomas looks on course to be ready for Week 1 after missing multiple weeks through injury. Had we been in the regular season, the tight end would have been back sooner - but the issue occurring during the summer allowed the Washington Commanders to err on the side of caution.

Thomas is expected to make a telling contribution this season within a scheme that looks more tight-end-friendly than in previous years. Cole Turner's shown enough during the preparation to suggest an increased role could be attained and John Bates' steady growth ensures he'll play a part - especially when it comes to the blocking aspect.

Perhaps the most surprising move made was the Commanders bringing Curtis Hodges through onto their 53-man roster. Although the second-year-pro struggled to make any sort of impression this summer, Ron Rivera isn't willing to give up on some eye-popping physical traits just yet.

Hodges is a huge specimen with some decent athleticism to match. However, he is rough around the edge and needs some significant polishing before further confidence emerges about his chances on the offensive rotation.

This would have been an ideal candidate for the Commanders' practice squad rather than allocating a roster spot to Hodges. But the head coach wasn't willing to risk losing the former Arizona State standout to the waiver wire - meaning someone more capable in another position group missed out.
